ASTLHLO
2007 Annual Meeting

Meeting Notes from Sylvia Pirani, Immediate Past President

Ten of us representing nine states (New York, Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Washington, Missouri, Connecticut, Oregon and Alabama) had a great meeting on Wednesday in Columbus as part of the NACCHO meeting.  We did the following (though not in this order):

1. Met with Grace Gorenflo from NACCHO and Dr. Al Gray, the new CEO of the Public Health Accreditation Board (
http://www.phaboard.org) and learned about the progress that the new agency is making toward establishing a process to accredit state and local health departments.

2. Discussed the NACCHO development of a new local health director orientation program (www.naccho.org).

3. Heard from each state representative on the public health
practice/infrastructure/workforce issues each is working on with the local health departments and boards of health.  As a result of this discussion, we identified resources that states are eager to share; these are in the ASTLHLO Sharing Document.

3. Identified some topics that we would like to discuss on our regular conference calls.  These include the following:

Costing Out Public Health, Strategies and Issues
Related to Small Local Health Departments that are combining as districts/regions to improve service delivery, Education and Experience Requirements
for Public Health Directors/Commissioners, Workforce Development, Recruitment, Retention and Preparing Future Leaders, State Progress
Toward Accreditation, and How States' Local Health Liaisons Conduct Customer Service.

4. Agreed that the affiliate should meet monthly by conference call.

5. Proposed that we allocate funding to support strategic planning.

6. Unanimously approved the new slate of officers (see the ASTLHLO association information frame on the Home Page).
